Gornal Athletic 1-4 Stone Old Alleynians

The Old Boys secured another three points on the road with an emphatic performance away at Gornal Athletic.

Matt Smith’s side dominated the game from start to finish with a display that left the manager purring: “ It was one of our best performances of the season, it was a comfortable win in the end and we could have had more, but I can’t complain with two good wins and performances away from home in four days. There were some really good individual performances, but as a team we had energy and pressed them, and the football was great to watch.” said Smith.

Adam Tomkinson was unfortunate not to open the scoring following a slick passing move that sent him clear, his shot beating Richard Kennedy in the Gornal goal but coming back off the post.

Tomkinson did however find the back of the net soon after. George Askey squaring the ball following Cameron Sinclair’s cross, to give the forward the simplest of finishes.

George Askey was again the provider for the second goal, his clever run was picked out by Danny Heard, as the front-man went clear only to brought down by Kennedy. And Tomkinson sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot.

Tomkinson could have had a first-half hat-trick when another good passing move found him in space on the edge of the box, but his shot went narrowly over.

Alleynians should have been out of sight at half-time as Heard, Askey and Sinclair also spurned good chances to increase their lead.

Fortunately Luke Askey was not wasteful after the break. The midfielder was on hand at the far post to turn home Adam Heath’s deep cross.

George Askey remained a constant menace to the home side’s back line but the visitors were unable to turn his efforts into goals.

The host’s got themselves a lifeline midway through the half when sloppy play saw Grant Joshua go through and he finished past Matt Burslem.

Stone responded immediately and felt that Danny Heard should have had a penalty when he was tripped as he was about to pull the trigger following another good passage of play.

But Heard did finally get his goal late on, as he turned on the edge of the box and chipped Kennedy for his 16th goal of the season.
